Walking as art itself. That’s a frustrating, slippery, and liberating thought. It’s that slippiness that draws me back, and that is where I think the art is.
Commissioned by the Axis Green Arts Department at Axis Ballymun in Dublin, and funded by the Arts Council.
For this project I worked and walked with artists Maeve Stone, Veronica Dyas, and Shanna May Breen, alongside Creative Producer Niamh Ní Chonchubhair. Each of us uses walking in our creative practice in different ways, and we came together to explore and experience those collectively, and ask the question – how can walking be art?
The project meandered from 2023 into 2025, taking shape in a collaborative, feminist, and non-hierarchical way, and allowing for the ebbs and flows of the lives of the group. In April 2025, we collectively installed an exhibition in Axis Ballymun, which we considered a way of opening our notebooks publicly.
A short text about the project that I wrote for the exhibition opening can be read here.
This is the soundscape Shanna created for the exhibition, featuring a text about our walks written by Veronica. You can read the text here.
